Silver Medal Award Winner
Historic Chicago Church Renovation
This major renovation project, honored with a Silver Medal Award from the Association of Licensed Architects, meticulously reconstructed a historic Chicago neighborhood church following a devastating fire. The restoration seamlessly blends modern upgrades with preserved historical features.
Meticulous Restoration and Modern Upgrades
The project involved both salvaging and replacing the fire, smoke, and water-damaged wood structure. Stenciling on the new wood recreates original decorative elements, ensuring historical continuity. A new terrazzo floor enhances aesthetics and improves acoustic performance, making the worship environment more purposeful.
Flexible and Enhanced Interior Spaces
The redesigned Chancel features a removable platform and furnishings that offers a versatile space for events. New pew chairs in the nave allow for flexible seating. A restored and expanded pipe organ significantly enhances the worship experience, with new storage created to discreetly hide the organ console when not being used.
Welcoming and Accessible Features
The rebuilt Narthex now boasts an open floor plan and a coffee bar, creating a welcoming atmosphere. A new elevator improves accessibility and provides a convenient street entrance.
This project effectively balances historical preservation with modern functionality, ensuring the church continues to serve its community while honoring its rich heritage. It stands as a testament to resilience and the community’s dedication to preserving its cultural landmarks.
