St. Thomas of Villanova Tabernacle Design

Palatine, Illinois

The new tabernacle at St. Thomas of Villanova in Palatine is thoughtfully integrated into the masonry wall, symbolizing the enduring and steadfast nature of faith. This integration not only provides structural support but also ensures that the tabernacle blends harmoniously with the sanctuary’s architecture. To highlight its significance, the tabernacle is surrounded by contrasting stone, making it a prominent focal point within the sanctuary. This design choice draws the congregation’s attention and emphasizes the sacredness of the Tabernacle.

Resting on a stone Altar of Repose, the Tabernacle is given a dedicated and reverent space. The altar serves as both a physical support and a symbolic place of rest for the Eucharist. Above the tabernacle hangs a sanctuary lamp, a traditional symbol in Catholic churches. This lamp is kept burning to signify the presence of Christ in the Eucharist stored within the tabernacle, serving as a continuous visual reminder of the sacredness of the space and the enduring presence of Christ.
